Yesterday I posted HERE that we would be having that nice suadero meat that we had bought Sunday and that has been marinating since then. It turned out that when Normita and I went to sit down and relax before the meal we were both so exhausted that we would not have enjoyed the meal. We decided to make a quick sandwich and keep the nice meat for today. Of course this means that it marinated for an extra day and that hopefully there is still something left in there and that the meat did not just dissolve completely. I have yet to check on that…

So we will have the suadero today with some oven-roasted baby potatoes and grilled asparagus, as planned yesterday. This time I hope that we actually eat it as I am starting to be very hungry, though Normita says she is not. We’ll see how this turns out today… If we actually do eat it I will try to post some photos of the results later.

I want to wish all of our regular readers the best for the New Year. 2010 will be a big year for us as one of our New Year resolutions is to work full time on our full line of food and wine services. We are currently looking for a permanent place to give wine appreciation and cooking classes in Mexico City.

If anybody know of a suitable place at an affordable rate in one of the nicer areas of town please get in touch with me on the phone at 1736 9016 or via email at jlpaquin@igourmand.com. Watch for an announcement on the next courses in the coming weeks and on a variety of new services. We will also start posting in the blog in both English and Spanish within the next few weeks.

Have a great New Year!

As some of you might have noticed, the main part of the website was extensively updated in the middle of last week. We finally had time to add the various services we are offering here in Mexico City. Those services are both for the general public and the food and beverage trade.

We have an introduction to wine course that is scheduled for November and also a motivational conference. All of our industry services are available worldwide and can be done remotely or on site as required.

Have a look at the main site to get an idea of what we do, and for those interested more information on the courses is available here.

In the new year we will start offering regular weekly classes once we are installed in our new premises.

We will also be launching a Spanish version of the blog in the coming month and doing an extensive revamp of the current site. The main site is already in both languages.

Have fun exploring the new features,

For the past few years we have been unable to update this site, even though it has been running on our internal server here at the office. It is a long story, but it involves moving a few time, not having any kitchen for more than 6 months, and for the past year not having time to stop and smell the roses. After so long not recording our cooking adventures, it will be strange to get back into it again.

In the coming weeks we will start posting again on a more or less regular schedule, and now that I am fluent in Spanish, I will try to occasionally post in both English and Spanish, and slowly start translating the content, at least the recipes to start with.

I also want to attend to the business side of this site that has being neglected for too long. To do this I will actively re-start development of our long awaited food/wine line of software. This is partly motivated by the fact that my IT consulting business wants to do more multi-platform (Windows, MacOS, Linux) development and we need as smaller project to test some new tools and integrations ideas. The fact that it will involve my favorite subjects will not hurt either. Keep an eye here for upcoming announcements about both the software and conference season.

We are also planning some Food/Wine and lifestyle conferences for the upcoming summer 2009 season here in Mexico City, and I thought that it would be a good idea to resuscitate the site to promote them and to get back in the lifestyle we used to have. It has been way to long that we have not been living under the creed that I always said I would live by, mainly to enjoy all the pleasures of life on a daily basis and live each day as if it was the last one…

I welcome back all of you that have been visiting regularly to see if there will finally be some new posts. To those that passes here on a search for new cooking ideas, stick with us as we will soon be posting regularly. I hope that you all enjoy what we have to say and that you will return regularly now that we will be posting new ideas.

Salud,

I had a great time with my parents who came to visit me in Montreal, and with Normita in Veracruz to commemorate our 6th anniversary. I enjoyed some gerat meal in both places and will talk about the food of Veracruz and the food culture in the coming days.

We suffered from major power trouble here at the office since late last week, and we were mostly offline as we could not plug the server in as the voltage was way too high blowing al the UPS in the office. After 3 trips from the electrician to fix the worse of the problems including the main electrical entrance wires not being screwed in at all, and no ground connection in the entire place we finally had a bit more reliable power. The voltage is still too high, but we will not hold our breaths waiting for the city to fix the problem.

We decided to fix the problem by purchasing a bunch of big voltage regulator and a bunch of new UPSs. I reinstalled everything yesterday and brought back the server online and will return to regular postings shortly.

I am a bit sad today, as all the efforts to prepare the picnic for Normita’s birthday were for nothing. First, we could not find a decent place to have it, as there are not too many real picnic areas around town where you can actually cook food, and the ones I had found are supposedly not too safe and somewhat full of garbage. Some people told us about many potentially nice places, but we did not find anybody that went there in the last 4-5 years, so it is difficult to know if they are still nice or not.

Normita found a natural preserve in the woods south of the city, and she called them, but you need to get there early in the morning to reserve a place for your picnic and they charge from $20 to $100 for a covered picnic spot. Before paying to go on a picnic I want to see the place, and I did not want to arrive early on Saturday morning with all the food, without being sure if we will have a place or not. We will investigate and see if there is a way of reserving ahead of time, and maybe do it there on another occasion. There is always the ‘trajineras’ in Xochimilco, but this also gets expensive to rent, and we went there last weekend. Maybe we can find some nice area out of the city one of these days, or simply do a cold picnic on a blanket somewhere in a park like we used to do.

The second reason we are not going is that this week was my mother in law’s birthday, and at the last minute the family decided to go out to a restaurant to celebrate her on Sunday. We had planned to relax on that day, as I am completely exhausted from work, and since the day was gone, and I still need the rest, we decided to postpone the picnic so that we can have a day off, and also time to investigate where to have it.

Instead I will probably prepare a nice meal for Normita on Thursday after work, and that will be a total surprise on what I will prepare.

We spent most of the afternoon running around and taking care of some loose ends that we urgently needed to take care of, and when we returned home we did the same here before settling down a bit. Once that was done I finally found some time to install a copy of the new version of WordPress on the server and configure it for the new blog. The URL is at http://www.sassquatch.org/ and the site is live as of about 15 minutes ago. I will start posting there later in the week and also make it a little bit more stylish when I have a few minutes to program a theme for it. Enjoy this new blog, and I will make sure to keep posting here the recipes and related content that you are used to.

Today I started on something that was long overdue. I moved the various recipes posted in the blog to some generic high level categories as I was somewhat losing track of if I posted this or that recipe in the past. This is only a start to facilitate navigations, and I will probably refine the sub-categories in the future, and also add another level or two in the hierarchy.

The basic WordPress software can display the hierarchy of the categories pretty well, but things get a bit cluttered when you start to have too many nested categories. I will look around to see if the newer version of WordPress is better at handling this out of the box, and if is I might decide to upgrade the version I am running for the blog. This will have to wait though as I do not want to take a chance in ruining the blog, so I will need to setup an internal test site first and I will not have time to do that until some urgent work around the office is done. I will also look around to see if there is some plugin available that makes navigating the categories smoother, and if not it might be worth writing one in my spare time.

In the meantime if you have any suggestions in organizing the categories, and if you know a good plugin that might help and making the navigation of them smoother don’t hesitate to let me know in the comments or directly at suggestion@igourmand.com
